Kathryn B. Freeland, MBA
With over 30 years in government contracting, Kathryn (Kathy) Freeland, M.B.A., leads A-TEK’s executive team and heads the firm’s overall growth strategy. With 26 years as an entrepreneur, her results-driven business focus promotes a skilled, empowered workforce that is actively attuned to the needs of federal agencies.
As CEO, Kathy is directly responsible for leading the company’s strategic vision and direction. She directs the company with a highly strategic business plan, referred to as Vision 2021 – The Way Forward, with the goal to optimize profits and returns on invested capital. She plays a vital role in business development, customer satisfaction, financial stability, and employee relations.
With a strong foundation in government contracting and hands-on leadership, Kathy blends a focus of employee growth with a deep understanding of government needs. Her team fosters a supportive work culture where employees develop and apply the most in-demand expertise – producing exceptional results for customers and shareholders.
Before acquiring A-TEK in 2010, Kathy was the founder and Chief Executive Officer of RGII Technologies, Inc., an information technology company serving multiple government departments. She was the visionary behind the company’s strategic direction and oversaw operations including business development, finance, customer satisfaction, and employee relations.
Kathy received the 2018 Enterprising Women Magazine – Enterprising Women of the Year Award, 2018 LeadersNest Inaugural FedFem Award Recipient, 2016 SmartCEO Magazine Brava Award, and was inducted into the Maryland Top 100 Women Circle of Excellence. Kathy is an author, having published “Navigating Your Way to Business Success: An Entrepreneur’s Journey” in 2009, which provides a motivational account of her path to successful business ownership. She holds an M.B.A. with a concentration in Financial Management from the University of Maryland, and a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Stephanie T. Cumberbatch
As Executive Vice President, Stephanie leads the growth initiatives for the Federal Civilian business unit, oversees service delivery, and oversees the strategy development and execution of new service offerings. Steph joined A-TEK in 2007, she possesses over 20 years of experience working for a range of government contractors supplying innovative and practical solutions in support of federal civilian missions. Her customer portfolio (present and past) include the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Department of Commerce (DoC), and Homeland Security.
In her role, she applies high-technology expertise with business acumen and in-depth knowledge of information technology service management and software development. She has led the development of software solutions to advance the collection and dissemination of health-research data to improve the individual, community, and public health.
She received her Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems and Decision Sciences from George Mason University, graduating magna cum laude. Stephanie is ITIL V3-certified as well as a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
Steve Erd brings to A-TEK over 20 years of experience with large and small contractors providing innovative and thoughtful solutions to address pressing government needs in support of federal health missions. As Vice President of Business Development and Capture, Steve leverages his experience to drive strategic growth, engage with government stakeholders, and collaborate with partners to yield measurable results. Steve’s work supporting the government contracting community has been recognized, including several leadership roles and awards from AFCEA, HIMSS and FedHealth100.
As Vice President, Business Development and Capture, Steve leads the business development organization to execute the new business growth strategy through customer engagement, strategic positioning, solutions development, and internal and external partner relationships. He leverages his experience by working closely with his peers across both Federal Civilian and Federal Health operating divisions, and functional support organizations to drive pipeline identification, qualification, capture and proposal management to develop new lines of business and expand market positioning in targeted segments.
His career began in the Ohio Senate and Office of the Attorney General before moving to Washington for a role supporting a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Steve applies his government and policy experience supporting various agencies to his role as a corporate leader and business development professional.
Steve holds a Master’s in Public Administration from George Washington University School of Business and Professional Management, and a B.A. in Political Science from Ohio State University.
Kathleen Collins brings over 22 years of experience to her position as Vice President of Finance and Accounting. She oversees all financial and accounting functions and serves as a trusted business advisor to A-TEK’s Chief Executive Officer. In this role, she is integral to ensuring A-TEK’s financial stability and growth.
Kathleen is responsible for the execution of A-TEK’s internal and external reporting and full compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). She provides executive oversight of financial services, banking, insurance, risk management, and outside accounting and regulatory authority relations.
Before joining A-TEK in 2004, Kathleen held a number of accounting and finance responsibilities in the telecommunications, healthcare, and environmental engineering industries.
In addition to her executive role, Kathleen serves as treasurer of the A-TEK Board of Directors.
Kathleen holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting with a minor in Business Administration from Strayer University.
Edward “Ted” Schmitt
In his role as Vice President and Account Manager – Health, Edward “Ted” Schmitt leads A-TEK’s and its subsidiary, Mackson’s health portfolios, which focus on delivering services to federal Health and Human Services agencies. He leverages the domain expertise of our highly-skilled subject matter experts in achieving mission success for our customers. Ted is charged with continuing to execute programs that enable customers to meet their mission requirements with high levels of customer satisfaction and he is responsible for identifying growth opportunities to leverage the expertise, talents, and dedication of our employees.
Ted brings a wealth of deep domain experience and advances A-TEK’s strategic commitment to expand its footprint in the growing federal health IT market. Ted also brings a unique combination of program leadership, DevOps expertise, and customer-service excellence to this role.
Before joining A-TEK, Ted served as the Senior Vice President for Salient CRGT and Vice President for Information Innovators Inc., where he was responsible for the Agile Development Solutions Group delivering digital services to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other federal agencies. He brings 25 years of customer-focused experience in Application Development, Health Services, Defense Logistics, and Higher Education.
As a Sr. Technical Director, Mr. Knowlton has architected, developed, and optimized networking and computer systems for a variety of federal clients, including but not limited to, HHS, FDA, VA, NCI, USGS, and DHS. As one of A-TEK’s, and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Mackson Consulting; Sr. Architects he serves as a technical expert representative across teams, clients, and the information technology industry. He offers technical support across practice areas in offering definition, positioning, and implementation of alternative technical solutions to meet client requirements more efficiently with optimum results. He has over 15 years of expertise in Oracle’s technology platforms and is considered an expert in the industry on Oracle best practices. He is also an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner.
